midpoint asked: Hi, how was staying in Glasgow for 6 months? Is there anything that we have to look out for etc? And things where we NEED and MUST visit?
My friends and I would be coming to Glasgow in Sept for our studies. Awesome blog btw!
Hum… In Glasgow or Scotland in general? I’ll answer both.
In Glasgow you want to go to the Botanical Gardens, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, The Necropolis, if you like science the Science Museum, and if you can get to it (its way on the other side of town) the Peoples Palace. There are also several museums in the University that are worth checking out (ie the Anatomy Musuem, Zoology Museum, Art Museum). The School of Art is really neat and I recommend at least walking to it and checking out the architecture if not taking a tour (however they are going to be doing some construction so…). I would check for any festivals, there was a celtic music fest when I arrived, and a quick google search will let you know about that. If you like plays or opera watch for rotations, students get discounts and there are often pretty good shows that come around from time to time.
Glasgow isn’t really a tourist city. But there are things to see. I would recommend taking the bus tour around the city its like £10 and will take you around to all of the interesting things in the city. The tickets are good for two days and you can hop on and off. It is a history tour too. That way you can pick things that might interest you but didn’t interest me or I didn’t get to do.
For the Scotland section I’m just going to recommend cities/places. They all have tourist websites so you can easily google them and see what you might like to do. Odiously I didn’t miss any castles. Y’all might like art museums. So:
Edinburgh (go more than once if the school offers a tour or something, there is just so much to do)
St Andrews (really beautiful, really historic)
An island (any of them, Isle of Arran is easiest to get to from Glasgow at two hours. But Mull is another popular destination. Both are lovely. However I feel like you might need a car to properly see the islands, Arran has a bus but it doesn’t run very often and there is a risk you might get stuck and/or not see everything you want to see. Mull is about four hours from Glasgow I think…)
Somewhere in the Highlands. I went to Glencoe, which was amazing but a bit small town/isolated if that bothers you (I loved it). Fort William was also lovely. Both are hiking destinations. It takes about four hours to get there so this would be a weekend trip.
Stirling is a great town, I really enjoyed visiting the castle and cemetery. It is a great day trip.
Loch Ness is always one of the main tourist destinations. And makes for lovely pictures, I didn’t make it up there but some of my friends did.
Isle of Skye is supposed to be amazing, again I didn’t make it up there its about a seven hour trip.
Now I’m not recommending you see everything. And I’m sure we have different interest so must visits for me might not be so for you. Hopefully you find a couple out of the ones I recommended. Might I recommend a Scotland travel guide? They are super helpful, I had a couple when I went over. I particularly like the Eyewitness guides.
I’m sorry this took me so long to answer, you ask right as I was about to leave Scotland. But if you have any more questions feel free to ask.
